So you’re one too? As someone who has lived with migraines for the past 40 years (ugh!) I have tried many, many prescription medications, holistic treatments and an elimination diet/food allergy testing over those years. About 3 years ago, I came to the end of the medical prescription route as it seemed as though my body was shutting down from all the medication over-use through the years. I felt toxic … and it wasn’t working anyway! So I weaned myself off of all medications over a period of six months and began experimenting with the homeopathic and natural route. I also spent this time detoxing my body from all the medications.
About a year ago, I did start a new medication. A once a month injection, called Aimovig. You can learn more about it at https://www.aimovig.com/. When I started there was a promotional special from the manufacturer and the medication is $5/month for the first year. It has made a huge difference and dropped my migraines from 2-3 a week to about 3 a month. During our monsoon season here in Arizona, which lasts about 6-8 weeks, I could find myself with a migraine up to 5 times a week but this past year it was around 5 migraines during the entire month of August. Such a huge help! And thankfully, no side effects.
Since 2017, I have tried many holistic treatments and there are still more I want to explore when funds become available. This is my current list of what is working for me and my EO recipe is included at the end.
Brenda’s Migraine Emergency Care
Chiropractic care—about 2-3 times a month (been doing this all 40 years too and it does help!)
8 hours of sleep each night – keeping the same schedule even on weekends within an hour
Diffuser at night with eucalyptus essential oil
Avoid refined sugar and too much of any kind of sugar
Ice packs on my head—wherever the pain is located
Warm heating pad on my neck and shoulders
Boiron Sinusalia – a homeopathic blend that works well when the pain is in my sinuses
Formula 303 – a natural muscle relaxer
My EO Migraine recipe – this helps with those tension headaches and can prevent or dissipate many migraines as they are beginning.
25 drops of peppermint
25 drops of “head ease” blend (M-Grain from Young Living)
20 drops of copaiba
15 drop of “muscle relief” blend (Panaway from Young Living)
10 drops of wintergreen
10 drops of frankincense
3 drops of lemongrass
Fill up the remainder of the bottle with a carrier oil. I find that organic grapeseed oil works well for me.
Just a reminder that EO’s in the eyes are not fun—so take extra care when applying to your forehead or near your eyes. If you are perspiring, it could also eventually run into your eyes. If this happens, flush your eyes with milk as water doesn’t do a thing. I’m speaking here from experience!
I use this at the first sign of tightness or pain at the base of my skull and from temple to temple along my hairline. This is a lifesaver for me and I never leave home without it! Please let me know if you try it and how it works for you. The worst thing that happens is when you walk into a room, someone says, “Oh, you smell minty!” And who doesn’t like that??
